NERCOMP EVENT
WebCT User Group - Taking Instructional Technology to the Next Level on Your Campus

Printer Friendly Version

Instructional technology has come a long way in a few short years. Five years ago, many schools were just beginning to find ways for faculty to develop simple course websites to allow electronic access to syllabi and other course documents. By now, your campus has probably gone through several rollouts of different versions of WebCT as well as other instructional software tools. In addition, you probably have a dedicated group of professional staff partnering with faculty in the role of instructional designers or technologists.

As the demand for instructional technology support continues to increase, many of us are facing the challenge of having to plan for and manage that growth. The focus of the Fall WebCT user group meeting is to talk about planning for change, developing support strategies, and finding ways to take instructional technology support on your campus to the next level of excellence. The purpose of the WebCT user group is to not only present you with new ideas to think about and different strategies to try out, but also to offer you the opportunity to meet and speak with others who may be facing similar challenges at their institutions.

Additional Information

Event Schedule:
8:30am – 9:30am Registration and Coffee

9:30am – 10:30am WebCT/Blackboard Merger: What Does It Mean For You?
Speaker: Peter Segall, Executive Vice President, WebCT

Peter will provide an update on the reasoning and progress of the merger and products updates in regards to CE and Vista and how they relate to the merger. Following this, he will answer questions from the group.

10:30am – 10:45am Break

10:45am – 11:45am Balancing the Equation: A Guide for Planning the Use of Technology on Your Campus
Speaker: Stewart Mader, Instructional Technology Coordinator, Brown University

As the use of instructional technology matures on campuses, it is important to formalize processes like redesigning course web sites, introducing new tools, and managing instructional technology projects. The discussions that an instructional technologist has with faculty who are relatively new to using technology are very different than those with advanced faculty users. The implications of making a new instructional technology tool available to the entire campus, as opposed to piloting its use with just a few "power users", will have a profound impact on the entire support structure of a central IT group – from the network and security group, to the system administrators, to the instructional technologists and the Help Desk staff.

11:45am – 1:00pm Lunch
Expand your professional network while you eat! Share ideas and brainstorm solutions with colleagues in similar positions. We will designate tables for instructional designers, instructional technologists, system administrators, etc.

1:00pm – 2:00pm Supporting Your WebCT Installation
Speaker: Kevin Corcoran, Senior Director, Technical Services, Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium

As the WebCT CE & Vista platforms evolve and usage grows on your campuses, your support staff must evolve to meet the new demands of the learning management system (LMS). A single staff member can no longer administer WebCT. The focus of this presentation is to discuss steps for building a support network around your LMS platform, including forming the team, reviewing support calls and performance, implementing monitoring, the role of the call center, developing tutorials and tracking systems and implementing a test environment and change control procedures.

2:00pm – 3:00pm Rolling out CE6: From Plan to Production
Speakers:
Sheila Mehta-Green, Ph.D. Senior Account Executive, WebCT
David Rosenbaum, Principal Product Specialist, WebCT

In order to ensure a smooth and successful transition to CE 6, there are many considerations for the upgrade team to take into account. These include technical issues, training, and management of the rollout, as well as internal marketing of the new features and functionality. WebCT staff will offer suggestions for effective planning for the implementation of this major software release.

3:00pm End

Speaker:
David Rosenbaum

David Rosenbaum is a Principal Product Specialist at WebCT, where he works with WebCT Vista customers on a range of activities from demonstrating the value of WebCT Vista, to developing product requirements for future releases. Previously, at WebCT, David led WebCT’s product management team in defining the company’s product strategy and releases, including the initial specifications for the initial release of Vista. With nearly twenty years of software industry experience, David joined WebCT in August 2000 as Director of Product Management, following a nine-month stint as Director of Product Management for PrintConnect, a Boston Internet startup. Prior to that, David spent twelve years at Lotus Development Corporation (an IBM Company), where he served in a variety of positions, including strategic alliance management, group product manager for Domino enterprise integration, software development manager and software engineer.
