NERCOMP EVENT
ePortfolio Webinar: Educating the Whole Student: What's Our Evidence?

Printer Friendly Version

Registration is now open for the first-ever NERCOMP/CTDLC ePortfolio Webinar, titled “Educating the Whole Student: What’s Our Evidence?” This event is sponsored and hosted online by WIMBA, Inc.

Are you up for an adventure? Join us for a pilot effort to offer high quality professional development to NERCOMP and CTDLC constituents online. Because this is the first time we have offered an event in this format, registration costs are set at an extremely affordable rate.

Event Topic and Focus: ePortfolios make it possible for students to make connections across a range of experiences, from formal learning to the learning that takes place informally in day-to-day life. Students are asked to upload “artifacts” that provide “evidence” of learning into their ePortfolios.

But what do we mean by “evidence,” and how does a student’s understanding of evidence compare with that of the faculty? What can we learn by listening to students tell us about their firsthand experiences as ePortfolio creators?

In this two hour webinar, you will consider these questions from a range of perspectives. The keynote presenters, noted ePortfolio authorities, will present the findings of their recent research, including a typology of evidence. Following the keynote, students who use ePortfolios will have a chance to speak for themselves. A panel of students will present their ePortfolios and discuss the experience from their perspective. Faculty who work with these students will be on hand to provide background information on the scope and role that ePortfolios play within their institutions.

Registration closes April 1st.

Additional Information

Event Schedule:
9:30-10:30 “Supporting and Assessing Lifewide Learning: Rethinking Evidence for Integration”

Keynote Presentation by Darren Cambridge and Kimberly Eby, George Mason University

A key feature of the ePortfolio is its ability to help students integrate their learning from the classroom with their learning from the world beyond it. Building on the concept of educating the whole student and Kathleen Yancey’s idea of three curricula – the delivered, experienced, and lived – we will explore how ePortfolios are helping faculty, students, and student affairs educators make connections between curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular learning. We will share examples from our own campus and other members of the Inter/National Coalition for Electronic Portfolio Research.

Research on how people use social software and the results of our own three-year research project suggest that understanding the more complex picture of learning that integrative portfolios offer requires rethinking the concept of evidence. The typology for analyzing use of evidence in ePortfolios we have developed can help guide teaching, learning, and assessment. It also suggests that stronger collaboration across roles and units in the university may be necessary to support the multiple kinds of learning we value.

10:30-11:30 “Electronic Portfolios: The Faculty, Student, and Employer Perspective”
Panelists: Cindy Stevens and Michael Burke, Wentworth Institute of Technology
Gail Matthews-DeNatale, Moderator

What does it feel like to create an electronic portfolio of your work? What is the value of the experience? What are the challenges? During this panel discussion, a faculty member and one of her students will share their perspectives on electronic portfolio as process. In preparation for a promotion, Dr. Cindy Stevens (Wentworth Institute of Technology) decided to create an online portfolio of her work. She recounts that the experience challenged her to “spend some time thinking about how I wanted to represent myself.” Today, Stevens involves her students in the creation of online portfolios, and she also has conducted research with over 100 co-op employers to find out what they want to see in a portfolio website. Student Michael Burke created an electronic portfolio and then went on to become a peer tutor in the portfolio development process. Stevens and Burke will share their electronic portfolios, discuss the insights that they gained from the experience, and report lessons learned from research with employers.

Note: Both Stevens and Burke’s electronic portfolios stand-alone websites, not developed using ePortfolio software. This session will focus on ePortfolio development as a process for self representation, not on the technicalities of implementation.
