New Models for Collaboration: Technology-Supported Cooperative Work

The topic of this workshop is collaboration, and the role that technology can play in enhancing peer-to-peer and student-instructor communication. This SIG will provide the audience with ideas for how to supplement or transform face-to-face teamwork into effective online collaboration. Presenters will share their stories and best practices for how they overcame collaboration and communication challenges and offer methods to improve these processes.

Audience: People who use or are considering using web 2.0 models for collaboration, including team members, leaders, managers and supporters.

9:00am - 10:30am Issues in Communication, and Making the Leap from F2F to Web 2.0
Speaker: Debra Dexter, Software Solutions Specialist, Worcester Polytechnic Institute

This session will begin with a review of the common forms of communication, the benefits of choosing one mode over another, the barriers to communication and where technology addresses those concerns vs. where it falls short. There will be discussion about the importance of setting communication goals that determine and prioritize the decisions we make around which technology is best resulting in the tool(s) that allow for rich communication in an efficient manner. In addition to research and best practice, this interactive session will include discussion among participants.

10:45am - 11:30am SharePoint Use for Committee and Student Project Work at WPI
Speakers:
Felicia Vidito, Administrative Assistant VI, Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Greg Lucini, Student, Worcester Polytechnic Institute

WPI has recently added SharePoint Services to its collection of collaborative technology. Uses on campus vary among students, faculty and staff. This session will introduce SP's use on the WPI Campus. WPI Staff Member Felicia Vidito will address the use of SharePoint for a faculty search committee, including the challenges that led the group to the technology, how it was utilized, and possible changes for the future. WPI Student Greg Lucini will discuss how SharePoint is used by student project teams and organizations, outlining the advantages and challenges that have been encountered in the past year.

12:30pm - 1:30pm Findings from the Adobe Connect pilot at Tufts University
Speaker: Melanie St. James, Senior Interactive Media Designer, Tufts University

A year-long pilot of the web conferencing product Adobe Connect was just completed at Tufts University. In this presentation, I will discuss Tufts' needs for new communication and collaboration tools for academic and administrative purposes, our process for selecting a product, our pilot findings, and how we intend to move forward.

1:35pm - 2:20pm Google Docs for Collaboration (and Consternation): An Instructor’s POV
Speaker: Jeff Halprin, Associate Dean of Liberal Arts, Nichols College

GoogleDocs are (is?) free, and very user friendly. A faculty member who has been using them to collaborate with peers and to encourage collaboration among students will discuss where it has seemed to work best and what obstacles he has found. The session will use those experiences as a jumping off point for a discussion of strategies for effective pedagogy and peer collaboration, inviting participants to share experiences, theories, and refine their approach.

2:20pm – 3:00pm Collaboration Activity and Discussion
Participants will take part in multiple collaboration activities throughout the day. We'll end with a discussion on other products like Huddle, Mzinga, and any other tools the audience mentions.

Speaker:
Debra Dexter

Debra holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Masters in Professional Communication from Clark University. As the campus Software Solutions Specialist, she trains employees and students at WPI on how to use common applications, including Windows operating systems and the Microsoft Office suite, design and media software, web 2.0 tools and the web content management system. In addition to her duties as a software instructor, she assists in moderating internal email communication and contributes to the editing of the Information Technology messaging efforts. Debra focuses on increasing productivity without sacrificing quality, and guides the community in the selection and use of the appropriate technologies to achieve their goal, efficiently and effectively.

Erin DeSilva

Erin DeSilva is an Instructional Technology Specialist at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Erin DeSilva provides outreach to the WPI Community to familiarize them with academic and instructional technologies and services. She also supports multimedia projects by working with faculty and students to identify appropriate hardware and software to meet their needs, and assisting with coursework in WPI's Multimedia Lab. Erin holds a B.S. from Simmons College, and has worked in science and technology education at the Museum of Science, Boston and a PBS affiliate in Toledo, Ohio.

Felicia Vidito

Felicia Vidito is an Administrative Assistant to the Department Head of Chemical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She has worked at WPI for approximately two and a half years. Although she does not consider herself to be advanced in technology, she is able to take advantage of many technological advances at WPI as new programs and applications are always being introduced among the community. It’s a great place to work and a great place to learn new things all the time. She thoroughly enjoys her role and the WPI community.

Jeff Halprin

Jeff Halprin is a foot-dragging adopter of educational technology: always looking for more effective ways to work with students and with colleagues, reluctant to devote large quantities of time to training himself or designing tech projects for students, but excited by the degree that students can get motivated to engage in learning when it has a technological layer. He is a Professor of English (and Associate Dean for Liberal Arts) at Nichols College. Also a Board Member and Past-President of the New England Faculty Development Consortium; he has worked in teaching and learning improvement for many years at Nichols, and presented workshops regionally and nationally.

Melanie St. James

Melanie St. James (Ed.M.) has been working at Tufts University in the UIT – Academic Technology group for the past seven years. As Senior Interactive Media Designer, Melanie contributes to the planning, design and usability of educational technology projects. In addition, Melanie has been managing the Tufts web conferencing pilot project.
