NERCOMP EVENT
Classroom of the Future

Printer Friendly Version

With the ever-increasing speed with which new technologies are emerging, planning for the classroom of the future can be difficult. This workshop will provide participants the opportunity to develop a classroom of the future, in collaboration with colleagues from institutions across the Northeast region. Prior to the workshop, participants will be asked to complete a small homework assignment. During the afternoon session attendees will be divided into groups where they will develop a classroom of the future. The session will conclude with presentations of the proposed classrooms.

Homework: Develop a list of the top five things students currently like about the classroom technology on your campus, and a top five list for faculty. Likewise, develop a list of the top five things students currently dislike about the classroom technology on your campus, and a top five list of things faculty dislike. Send along 3 pictures of those particular things you or students might like about a particular learning space.

Additional Information

Event Schedule:
8:00am - 9:00am Registration & Coffee

9:00am - 10:00am All Designs are Predictions: Classroom Design in a time of Zooming Technology and User Expectations
Speaker: Malcolm Brown, Director of the Educause Learning Initiative

Architects tell us that all designs are predictions. Just what should our classroom designs predict, what should they anticipate in order to be relevant during a era of rapid technology development and perhaps even more rapidly developing user expectations? In this session, we will seek to explore the issues and key considerations associated with classroom design in the NetGen and Web 2.0 era.

10:00am - 10:15am Break

10:15am - 11:15am Learning Spaces 3.0: Designing to Encourage Interaction
Speaker: Andrew Milne, Chief Executive Officer, Tidebreak Inc.

Living in a "2.0" world has changed the way we think about the potential of interactive media. Looking ahead a "3.0" world, we foresee sophisticated, flexible spaces that integrate physical and virtual environments, where collaborative interaction permeates learning activity. What factors will drive the design of these spaces? What are some of the design challenges that will emerge? How can institutions effectively plan and design such spaces to embrace the continual evolution of technology and pedagogy? We will explore answers to these questions and more.

11:15am – 12:00pm Break Out Session
Following a brief discussion, participants will break into groups to begin developing a classroom of the future.
Participants will be taken through the design process, consider various design aspects, and will leave the workshop with techniques and tools they can take back to their respective campuses.

Objectives:
1. What technologies will be used and how will they be integrated into the curriculum?
2. What furniture might be in the classroom, and how might it be placed
3. How might the college change the way it purchases technology and plans allocation of space to meet this challenge?
4. What problems will be solved, or avoided, by the design of this classroom?
5. What elements of infrastructure will need to be taken into consideration?

12:00pm - 1:00pm Lunch

1:00 - 2:00pm Break Out Session: Continues

2:00pm - 3:00pm Regroup

Group will come back together to share their plans and to finish any lingering discussions.

3:00pm Evaluations and End
