NERCOMP EVENT
Blackboard User Group Fall 2009

The NERCOMP Blackboard User Group is designed to address the needs of the local learning management systems user communities and provide a joint forum for networking and the sharing of ideas. Come learn how your peers in the Northeast area are using Blackboard, WebCT and Angel for innovation in teaching, learning and community building and to hear more about the Blackboard vision and strategic direction as well as the latest products and services.
Outcomes for the Day:
-Network and make connections with colleagues
-Learn innovative uses of Blackboard from peer presentations
-Expand your knowledge of Blackboard
-Hear from Blackboard about the latest enhancements in the learning management system

Getting to the Campus Center Parking Garage… From Massachusetts Avenue (after exiting from Route 116) At the second set of lights turn left onto Commonwealth Avenue – Boyden Gymnasium is on the corner of Commonwealth & Massachusetts Avenues. At the next set of lights turn right onto Campus Center Way and proceed up Campus Center Way – The entrance to the Campus Center Parking Garage is at the top of the hill on the right.
Parking is available in the Campus Center Garage, pick up your parking pass at the registration desk and pay $5 when leaving.
Park on the 2nd floor of the parking garage and walk thru the hallway into the Student Center and go down to the first floor.

Eric Palson, Manager of eLearning Multimedia, Babson College
Rebecca Petersen, Director, eLearning Resources & Professional Development eLearning and Instructional Support, Lesley University
Students today are asking for more interaction in their learning experiences. Through a panel presentation and group discussion we will look at how native LMS tools and freely available Web 2.0 tools, such as blogs, wikis, twitter, flicker, viddler and other social networking tools, are being used to enhance and expand the student learning experience. Examples will be discussed that display how faculty have engaged instructional designers to expand their current learning experiences to include the use of Web 2.0 tools.

10:45am – 11:15am Roundtable Discussion: Infusing Web 2.0 Tools into the Learning Environment
How are Web 2.0 tools being used on your campus, in your courses, by program administrators, by your faculty and by your students? What are the challenges and barriers to success? How will the uses be assessed?
11:15am – 12:00pm Using Tracking Reports in Blackboard (Vista 4)
Speaker: Marcie Savoie, Instructional Technologist eLearning Programs, University of Massachusetts, Amherst
Discussion will focus on how various Tracking Reports in Blackboard have been used in Continuing & Professional Education at the University of Massachusetts to address issues including:
- Technical Support
- Academic Dishonesty
- Registration and Billing Issues
Participants are encouraged to discuss examples of how tracking reports are used in their institutions and to ask questions. There will be a brief demonstration on how to run Student and Granular tracking reports in Blackboard as time allows.

We are all thinking about moving to Bb9 at some point. The panel discussion will focus on implementation strategies in moving to Blackboard 9 including beta test planning, communication approaches and community training. Examples will be discussed that bring questions to the group and talk about best practices.

Barbara Knauff
Barbara Knauff, Ph.D., is a Senior Learning Technologist at Dartmouth College. After her first career as a French professor at St. Mary's College, Maryland's public honors college, Barbara moved to the Curricular Computing group at Dartmouth College in 2001. Her mission is to help faculty integrate technology into the curriculum in order to help today's students meet their learning goals and objectives. Barbara also works with the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL), whose mission is to promote and support effective teaching. She frequently presents at regional and national conferences on current issues in technology and education; and especially enjoys occasionally teaching in her subject area as an adjunct professor of French at Dartmouth. A native of Marburg, Germany, Barbara received her B.A. from Wellesley College, and her M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Yale University.

Eileen McMahon
Eileen McMahon, Ed. M. is a Senior Instructional Designer at UMass Boston. She works closely with faculty to integrate technology into curriculums, and create strong pedagogically sound applications of technology. Her areas of interests include: innovative pedagogies, open educational resources, free culture, and mind/brain research.

Eric Palson
Eric Palson is the Manager, eLearning Multimedia & Production. His responsibilities for the group are in the areas of production, development, usability, and multimedia (including video/audio production/post production).
Eric's areas of expertise include user interface design, print design, marketing, and advertising. Before joining Babson College, he worked for a number of consulting and design firms, including Nextera Enterprises. Eric also co-founded the design firm Drive Thru Designs, where he is currently on the board of directors. In addition to his work at CITG, Eric is a part-time faculty member at Emerson College, where he teaches Web and graphic design.
Eric holds a BA in advertising and graphic design from Loyola College in Maryland. His postgraduate studies include media theory at Emerson College and is currently enrolled in Babson's MBA program.

Marcie Savoie
Marcie Savoie is an Instructional Technologist & Faculty Support Coordinator for Continuing & Professional Education (CPE) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She has eight years experience in Continuing Education working with both credit and non-credit programs and courses. Previous positions held in Continuing Education include Learning Management System (LMS) Administrator (four years) and Program Coordinator (three years). She has experience with several different Learning Management Systems including eCollege, Prometheus, WebCT, and Blackboard (Vista 4) and has played key roles in platform migration, online course evaluation, and course conversion projects. Marcie also serves on the CPE Director’s Advisory Council and is currently Chair of the CPE Appeals committee.

Matt Davis
Matt Davis - As a Blackboard Sr. Solutions Engineer since 2003, Matt Davis, a 25 year software industry veteran, has spoken with thousands of users and hundreds of institutions nationwide. As a functional product expert, his job is to interpret the needs of faculty and students, and coach institutions on how best to apply their requirements to a teaching and learning platform. He is an engaging and animated speaker that will often challenge his audience to think outside the box.

Rebecca Petersen
Rebecca Petersen is the Director of eLearning Resources and Professional Development at Lesley University. In this role she evaluates emerging technologies and Web 2.0 tools for inclusion in web-enhanced, hybrid, and online courses. Rebecca provides oversight of faculty professional development for the adoption of Web 2.0 tools, web-enhanced course design, and the myLesley (Blackboard) course environment. She is also involved in the pilot design for Lesley’s new ePortfolio/ eAssessment platform. Rebecca holds an Ed.M from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. in American History from Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Tova Duby
Tova Duby is the Senior Manager, Blended Learning Implementation in the Curriculum Innovation and Technology Group at Babson College. Her focus is on creating a unified effort around blended learning; starting with the Fast Track blended MBA program and then branching out to all areas of campus. She works closely with Deans, Faculty Directors, Graduate Programs and Student Affairs, Undergraduate Program Administration, ITSD, Faculty and Staff as a liaison between the different groups to support the successful implementation and growth of Babson's blended learning and teaching initiatives.
Tova's background includes eLearning platform management, operations and project management, systems training, desktop support, and systems analysis. Before joining Babson College , she worked as a business systems analyst at John Hancock, where she provided project management and systems analysis support to the business community. Prior to her time at John Hancock, Tova was a senior member of the desktop support team at Allmerica Financial, a role she entered into after being a part of the systems training group.
Tova holds an MBA from Clark University and a BS in business communication from Bentley College.
