Raising cyber security awareness on college and University campuses is no easy task. This SIG will focus on best practices and challenges related to communicating cyber security information in higher education. Cyber security will be broadly defined to include a wide range of topics, from computing issues and data security to online privacy and identity theft.
Presenters will share their experiences on:
- Planning and implementing National Cyber Security Awareness Month* events and campaigns
- Developing and delivering cyber security awareness materials (online, print, etc.)
- Measuring effectiveness of cyber security awareness campaigns
- Ongoing communication strategies for cyber security awareness (beyond Cyber Security Awareness Month)
- Emerging cyber security topics
*National Cyber Security Awareness Month is an annual campaign established in 2001 to help communities stay safe online. Each October, many colleges and Universities sponsor events and activities designed to increase awareness of current online security threats.

Planning Cyber Security Awareness Month Events at UMass Amherst
Speaker: Kevin Skelly, Manager, OIT Software Support, University of Massachusetts Amherst
This presentation will provide an overview of the cyber security awareness events implemented at UMass Amherst in the past three years, and will discuss the importance of designing targeted events (based on audience), using a communication plan to keep track of weekly events and communications, and incorporating ‘lessons learned’ into future planning efforts. Success factors for different events as well as challenges to security awareness will also be addressed.
Planning and Implementing Cyber Security Awareness: A case study of three October Cyber Security Month programs at the University of New Hampshire
Speaker: Petr Brym, Director of IT Security, University of New Hampshire
This case study will provide an overview of the October Cyber Security Month program at the University of New Hampshire. It will be presented from the point of view of the UNH IT Security Officer and will emphasize the value of the month's events in the broader IT security program at the University, how we selected topics for the program, the partnerships we built to bring in speakers and to hold panels and workshops, and how we marketed the program to raise awareness.
The presentation will also cover information about lessons learned from our first Cyber Security Month, how we applied those lessons to the second year, and how we are now applying the lessons learned from the second year to this year's planning. Examples of how building enough critical mass of events leads to additional efforts, contributions, and events that were not included in the original planning and implementation will also be discussed.
Strategies for Communicating Cyber-Security Awareness at Yale
Speakers:
Loriann Higashi, Manager, ITS Student Technology Collaborative, Yale University
Patrick Lynch, Director, Design and User Experience Communications & Planning, Yale University
A case study covering the cyber security campaigns that we have had at Yale over the past several years, particularly looking advertising, communications, and supporting events. We will discuss our lessons learned as well as our future planned efforts and directions.
10:45am – 11:00am Break
11:00am – 12:00pm Panel Discussion – Cyber Security Awareness Events
Speakers:
Jake Cunningham, Senior Information Security Analyst, University of Massachusetts Amherst
Kerry Shaw, Web Communications Manager, University of Massachusetts Amherst
Andrew Vernon, Help Desk Manager, University of Massachusetts Amherst
This panel discussion will explore issues related to planning cyber security awareness events. Kerry Shaw will show how Web traffic data and other metrics can be used for effective planning. Chris Misra will focus on how regular meetings with campus IT professionals about securing sensitive data have helped create a security community of practice at UMass Amherst. Andrew Vernon will make a case for expanding the definition of cyber security beyond computing issues and include newer topics such as cyber harassment, online gambling, or identity theft.
12:00pm – 1:00pm Lunch
1:00pm – 1:45pm Group Activity: Creating a Cyber Security Awareness Communication Plan
Using the lessons learned from the morning’s presentations, participants will work in groups to develop a communication plan for next year’s Cyber Security Awareness Month. Groups will select a cyber security theme and brainstorm communication deliverables and assessment criteria for an audience of their choice (e.g., students, faculty, or staff).
