Geo-everything: Map Mash-ups, Geotagging, and Interactive Learning

Are you looking for ideas to incorporate interactivity into the classroom, a website, or your own research? Join us for this hands-on session as we explore how to create map mash-ups, geotag (adding coordinates to photos and maps), develop interactive maps, and investigate mobile mapping applications which engage your users and foster critical thinking. Bring your laptop and join us as you develop your own mash-ups from basic to impressive interactive maps all within one day.
This session is designed to appeal to participants that are interested in learning more about incorporating Geo-everything concepts within the classroom, research, and work environment. Whether you are new to these concepts or experienced, this session will provide hands-on examples which can be adapted for your own applications.

9:30am - 10:30am Mashup 101: From Concept to Reality 9
Speaker: Michael Howser, Undergraduate Education/GIS Librarian, University of Connecticut Libraries
This hands-on session will provide an overview of how to create a map mash-up using Google Maps and expose participants to data sets and resources used to generate map mash-ups. During the session participants will explore maps within the context of their own interests and generate a mash-up for potential use in the classroom, incorporation on a website, or for use within an learning management system (e.g. Blackboard).
10:30am - 10:45am Break
10:45am – 11:45am Geotagging and GPS
Speaker: Stacey Maples, GIS Assistant, Yale University Libraries
Participants will explore how to collect GPS data, Geotag photographs, Georeference maps, and upload GPS data to develop a custom map mash-up. This session will explore data gathering techniques, Geotag a series of photographs and are encouraged to bring their own photos and research as these items will be added to a map mash-up.
11:45am – 12:45pm Lunch
12:45pm – 1:45pm Animating and Sharing Maps
Speaker: Alexander Chaucer, GIS Instructional Technologist, Skidmore College
This hands-on session will provide participants with an opportunity to explore methods for taking maps and data and animating them to highlight changes over time. In addition, this session will provide multiple examples for how you can share maps and collaborate with colleagues.
1:45pm - 2:00 pm Break
2:00pm - 3:00pm Mobile Applications & Advanced Mash-ups
Presenter: Michael Howser, Undergraduate Education/GIS Librarian, University of Connecticut Libraries
Participants will explore how to create mash-ups using data from a Web Mapping Service (WMS) and other advanced techniques for adding large datasets and images to a mash-up. In addition, participants will explore the basics of mobile applications for sharing maps and creating mobile friendly maps.

Alexander Chaucer
Alexander Chaucer works at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, as a GIS Instructional Technologist and is the coordinator of the GIS Center for Interdisciplinary Research. In this role he provides geospatial support for student and faculty research and teaching, as well as coordinating the Center outreach and community partnerships. Prior to this he coordinated the educational operations of NASA’s Spatial Information Technology Center in Johnstown, NY. Alex has a MA in Geography and is pursuing a PhD. in Information Science from the State University of New York at Albany. Research interests include geospatial education, open source GIS tools, mobile learning, project-based learning, curriculum development and assessment, and instructional design.

Michael Howser is the Undergraduate Education/GIS Librarian at the University of Connecticut Libraries Map and Geographic Information Center – MAGIC. Michael’s professional focus is on providing opportunities for students to develop maps which incorporate data from multiple disciplines while avoiding technical jargon, complex code, or other factors which can create roadblocks to the creative process of making maps. With a hands-on approach and an interest to infuse fun into the learning process, map mash-ups have become the perfect medium for enabling users to create custom maps without the steep learning curve that mapping software introduces, and as a result more disciplines and topics can benefit from maps than ever before.
As a researcher, his interests blend online mapping, mash-ups, and enhancing user access to maps and GIS data via the Internet into a fun, creative outlet which benefits MAGIC’s users and the larger map community. Michael enjoys working with students, researchers, and the larger community to introduce the wonderful world of mash-ups and looks forward to working with participants to enable them to impress their friends with the cool, customized map mash-ups they can create.
