Getting on the Assessment Bandwagon: Interpreting Results from National Surveys

Printer Friendly Version
|
When asked to assess the effectiveness of their services, many information professionals develop home-grown assessment methods. Instead, administering existing, well-run national surveys on your campus often delivers the assessment bang you need in less time and at lower cost. This interactive SIG will help you differentiate between several major national surveys and become skilled at interpreting their results.
By deeply engaging with several national surveys, participants in this SIG will:
- Become familiar with the goals and methods of these surveys
- Learn to effectively interpret survey results through hands-on practice
- Compare the results of multiple surveys to more deeply assess your organization’s services
Recommended articles distributed prior to the SIG will explore ideas raised by SIG speakers and participants.

Additional Information
Event Schedule:
8:00am - 9:00am Registration & Coffee
9:00am - 9:15am Open & Welcome
Speakers for the Day:
Karrie Peterson, Asst. Dir. for Research & Instruction, Brandeis University
Josh Wilson, Director for Integrated Services, Brandeis University
9:15am - 9:45am Setting The Context
Assessment is too large a topic to cover in one SIG, or even in a series of SIGs. We’ll start the day by interactively exploring the contours of the assessment landscape and considering where this SIG fits in.
9:45am - 10:30am Survey Stories
Before deciding to participate in a national survey, it’s important to understand what each survey seeks to accomplish and what your institution would learn from participating. We’ll look closely at several major national surveys (including the MISO Survey, the ECAR Survey of Students and IT, the EDUCAUSE Core Data survey, and the National Survey of Student Engagement). We’ll also share some stories about how peer institutions have acted upon important insights gained from survey results.
10:30am - 10:45am Break
10:45am - 12:00pm Data Interpretation, Part 1
Before lunch, SIG participants will roll up their sleeves and interpret results gathered as part of a major national survey.
12:00pm - 1:00pm Lunch
1:00pm - 2:00pm Data interpretation, Part 2
After lunch, SIG participants will interpret results from a second major survey.
2:00pm - 2:45pm Putting It All Together
Finally, we’ll think together about how findings from each set of survey results can be combined to provide even deeper insights into the delivery of information services.
2:45pm - 3:00pm Wrap-up and Evaluations
