NERCOMP EVENT
Specialty Facilities

Printer Friendly Version
|
Specialty Facilities are integral to the modern learning environment. They are enhancing the academic atmosphere in campuses across the country by maximizing the usage of computing and digital media in a lab setting. This event will showcase ways to plan, design, execute, coordinate, and support your specialty facilities. These facilities are designed specifically to support the teaching and learning process. Come see how these types of facilities are planned and implemented at a wide range of institutions –from ones that have generous budgets to ones with budget constraints.
Attendees at this workshop will learn how institutions are supporting faculty and students in a variety of facilities with a wide range of technology. The support of these facilities demand knowledge of hardware and software that is often very different than what we encountered on a daily basis. Presentations will include useful information for designing and supporting specialty facilities. What are the budget constraints and restrictions? What department does the support fall onto?
After the lunch break, attendees will participate in a Lightning Round SIG. Please send an outline of your five minute presentation in advance to andolink@union.edu and strohecj@union.edu containing information regarding your specialty facilities including problems and solutions that you have encountered at your own schools. Presentations must be received by January 15, 2010.
Speakers from schools including Hamilton College, Plymouth State University, Tufts University, and Wesleyan University will discuss creation and ongoing support of new specialty facilities.

Additional Information
Event Schedule:
8:00am - 9:30am Registration & Coffee
9:30am - 10:15am Specialty Facilities and Services @ Wesleyan's Academic Labs
Speaker: Heric Flores, Ph D, Manager of Instructional Media Services, Wesleyan University
Wesleyan has a total of 5 specialty labs providing specialized hardware, software and tutoring services to our various academic departments - Arts, Math, Sciences, and Social Sciences. In each lab, maintenance of equipments and computers as well as tutoring services are provided by professionally trained student employees.
10:15am - 10:30am Break
10:30am – 11:15am Mind the Gap: Connecting IT with Specialized Academic Technologies Speaker: Vasken Hauri, Systems Administrator, Plymouth State University
Meeting the technology needs of academic departments can be quite challenging to an IT department, and that difficulty is often proportional to the amount of specialized services and hardware required for each field of study. At Plymouth State University, this challenge was met by creating a systems administrator position, funded by an academic money line but staffed by a member of ITS, to support three of the most technology-dependent departments, Computer Science, Languages & Linguistics, and Communication Studies. We will address how this position was created and how it has helped to improve levels of support while reducing IT costs, as well as some of the challenges that were faced along the road.
11:15am – 12:00pm Support and the Visual Arts
Speaker: Krista Siniscarco, Instructional Technologist, Hamilton College
Over the past several years the Studio Art department and Information Technology Services at Hamilton College have been working together to create a specialty computer lab to support the growing digital arts curriculum. This presentation will talk about the specific technology needs of the art department; the planning, research and development it took to bring the physical space into fruition; and the management, equipment, staffing, training, policies and procedures that are in place to support the faculty and students.
12:00pm - 1:00pm Lunch
1:00pm – 1:55pm A Digital Voice for Education
Speaker: Philip Gay, Manager, Curriculum Resource Center, Tufts University
The Curriculum Resource Center was created within the Department of Education to support faculty and students in their use of media production and technology. The CRC lab includes digital audio and video recording equipment, mac editing stations, and access for training in both video production and online e-portfolio support. Students as preservice teachers in the Master of Arts in Teaching program use video to document their practice in the classroom. Digital Toolboxes allow them to post video and reflect on each others practice in a web 2.0 environment. Additionally the equipment is used to support various programs within our department for dissemination and recruitment. Videos posted on the department’s website include features within disciplines of math, science, psychology, history, art, and museum studies. The CRC is also developing workshops to advance online place based learning in environmental science and interdisciplinary workshops to help history teachers encourage their students to create and share new media presentations.
