NERCOMP EVENT
WordPress University

WordPress, an open source web publishing platform, has proven to be a robust and flexible tool able to meet a variety of web application needs on college campuses. Multi-user blogging platforms, campus newsletters, course project sites and central event calendars are just a few of the ways WordPress is being deployed in higher education. At WordPress University we’ll explore case studies and examples of how WordPress is adapted to meet these various needs. The day’s schedule will include opportunities to share and explore ideas with fellow attendees that can be applied to WordPress implementations in their home environments.
This is not a technical, hands-on workshop, and while some technical web programming details will be discussed, the program is designed to appeal to people with a range of experiences creating web sites and working with on-line web 2.0 and social networking tools. Some experience designing or editing web pages, managing a web site, or working on support of a web-based application will be helpful, but not essential.

Additional Information
Event Schedule:
8:00am – 9:00am Registration and Coffee
9:00am – 9:10am Introduction - Welcome Remarks
Speaker: Randall Rode, Yale University
9:10am - 9:50am Crossing Web Boundaries with WordPress
Speaker: Jay Collier, Web Communications, Bates College
A decade ago, the higher education Web experience was segmented into walled gardens -- the public Web site, the course management system, online transactions, alumni communities, events calendars. The legacy of that structure was that our lifelong relationships with the college were interrupted as we students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni moved from system to system.
The next-generation online ecosystem will let us re-organize these experiences, allowing for deepening engagement throughout our lives: from prospective student to elder alum. How will software like WordPress fit in? How can we evaluate, select, and configure systems to support our users' needs, rather than the other way around?
9:50am - 10:20am Group Activity #1
10:20am - 10:30am Break
10:30am - 11:00am Getting Creative with WordPress Plug-ins: Adaptive Re-use and Growing Your Own
Speaker: Ioannis Yessios, Manager of Web Technologies, Instructional Technology Group, Yale University
Yes, even non-programmers can have success digging into the magic behind WordPress plug-ins. This session will look at a couple of plug-ins used for instructional support at Yale, and how they were developed and adapted to meet the needs of faculty and classroom projects. The goal is to demystify how plug-ins work, provide examples of how they are used to meet instructional needs, and point to resources for further explorations.
