NERCOMP EVENT
Managing Student Workers

Printer Friendly Version

Many Institutions of Higher Education employ student workers to assist with service delivery. While student workers can add tremendous value to an organization, they also bring with them unique management challenges.

Today’s student workers (the “Millenials”) bring with them their own set of expectations and challenges. Join us to learn about the mindset of the ‘Millenial’ workforce and hear from experienced supervisors of students workers as they share their methods for facing the challenges associated with managing this unique workforce.

This SIG also offers the opportunity for you to interact with your counterparts at other institutions and share experiences on a more personal level. Bring plenty of business cards and build a support network of your very own!

10:45am – 11:45am Managing Workers Who Are Students: The Balance Between Employment and Education

Speakers:
Sharon Griffin Edson, Help Desk Coordinator, Clark University
Matthew Essig, Help Desk Coordinator, Clark University

Employing students is a practice that helps to increase the strength of any University department on many levels. Employing students helps to facilitate a sense of involvement and community between a department and the community. However, employing students comes with its own advantages and pitfalls. How do we, as employers, effectively balance the professional expectations we put on workers and the understanding that their primary reason for being at college is to be a student.

11:45am – 12:30pm Making Connections

The lasting value of attending any NERComp SIG reaches far beyond the day’s content delivery. Building a support network of your peers can provide an invaluable resource that will last long after the SIG is over. Take some time to connect with your peers - share insights, swap stories and learn from each other!

1:30pm – 3:00pm "Managing a Millenial Workforce"
Speaker: Carie Windham, Student & Journalist
