This SIG will cover identifying the threats that your campus faces, best practices, how to get the most out of your current technology and informative information on purchasing. Each speaker is renowned for their expertise and has a focus in education. All segments will be accompanied by two technicians, so that during break and lunch you will be able to get some one on one time.

Getting to the Campus Center Parking Garage… From Massachusetts Avenue (after exiting from Route 116) At the second set of lights turn left onto Commonwealth Avenue – Boyden Gymnasium is on the corner of Commonwealth & Massachusetts Avenues. Due to construction, Campus Center Way is closed, continue on Commonwealth and take a right onto Holdsworth Way - please refer to the map link under Location for details.
Parking is available in the Campus Center Garage, pick up your parking pass at the registration desk and pay $5 when leaving.
Park on the 2nd floor of the parking garage and walk thru the hallway into the Student Center and go down to the first floor.

9:20am – 10:20am Intrusion Prevention Systems: Fact and Fiction
Speaker: Chris Harrington, former CTO Nitro Security
In this talk we will cover what a network Intrusion Prevention System is, the different types available and an overview of the vendors selling IPS solutions. For those who have deployed IPS we will discuss some industry best practices in device placement, tuning and logging. If you are considering an IPS investment we will cover what to look for (and look out for) in an IPS solution. Finally we will cover where IPS products and technology are heading over the next couple of years.

10:30am – 12:00pm Everything You Wanted To Know About Computer Malware, But Were Afraid You Would Get Infected If you Asked
Speaker: Randy Abrams, Director of Technical Education, ESET
This presentation has evolved from an anti-virus education class at Microsoft to a course that teaches about a broad range of malicious software and how it works. The course also covers how anti-malware software works, including the differences between signature based detection and types of heuristics. The effects of compression, encryption, and polymorphism on anti-malware software will be discussed with attention to explaining how and what these techniques are. Finally, tips on keeping from getting infected are shared. This presentation has been enjoyed by complete novices as well as sophisticated users, such as programmers, testers, and technical support representatives.

* What are viruses and how do they work?
* Definitions of types of Trojan Horse Programs and other malicious software
* How anti-virus software works
* How compression, encryption, and polymorphism work and their effects
* The importance of configuring the operating system and applications for safety
* Why updating is so important and what to update
* The most important word concerning disinfection of infected systems.

1:00pm – 2:30pm Securing Your Network Infrastructure
Speaker: Jeff Reed, President Classic Networking
We will discuss the ongoing requirements to build a secure networking infrastructure. The discussion will focus on switches, routers and Network Access Control techniques.
* Network Access Control - Discuss the concept in general terms, Compare Cisco, Bradford and some smaller solutions and the pitfalls and challenges.
* Client Assessment and scanning
* Joining all the students to the domain: the pros and cons.
* Securing your switches and routers
* Using 802.1x on the wired devices. No more Mac Spoofing

Speaker:
Christopher Harrington
Christopher Harrington, a former Naval Intelligence Officer, brings over 13 years of Information System and Security experience including secure network design, enterprise IDS / IPS deployments and network forensics. Prior to joining NitroSecurity, Mr. Harrington held senior Information Systems & Security positions with the National Security Agency (NSA), Office of Naval Intelligence, NMI InfoSecurity Solutions and CertCo. Mr. Harrington holds the CISSP certification and is an active member of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) and the FBI’s Infragard program. Previously Mr. Harrington served as NitroSecurity’s Technical Advisor to the Voice Over IP Security Alliance and NitroSecurity’s representative to the ICSA Network IPS Developers consortium. Mr. Harrington held a Top Secret / SCI security clearance.

Jeffrey Reed
Jeffrey Reed is the owner and President of Classic Networking and the CTO of MSI Software. He has over 20 years of computer and network experience. Jeff spent 12 years at PA Blue Shield (PBS) managing the mainframe environment, help desk and desktop support. While at PBS he installed their first Token Ring network. At a PBS subsidiary he installed their first Novell Directory Services (NDS) solution. Jeff spent several years as a Cabletron/Enterasys Systems Engineer supporting major enterprise customers. He started Classic Networking Inc. (CNI) in 2000 and continues to grow their expertise every year. Jeff received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University Of Phoenix. He is also certified as a ProCurve Master ASE, Enterasys ESSE and Cisco CCNA, CCDA and Wireless Certified Engineer.

Randy Abrams
Randy Abrams came to work for ESET LLC as the Director of Technical Education in July of 2005. Prior to joining ESET, Abrams worked at Microsoft for over 12 years. From 1997 to 2004 Abrams was responsible for the design and administration of the processes that Microsoft uses to prevent infected product from leaving the labs which release virtually all of Microsoft's products. Abrams has been a frequent presenter at the Virus Bulletin conference, the EICAR conference, and the conference of the Association of Anti-Virus Asia Researchers (AVAR) where he sits on the board of Directors.
Some of the topics presented have included virus scanning methods, testing anti-virus software and the automation of multi-scanner systems.
