Similarly, archivists have long known that digitizing primary-source collections is far more complex than just slapping some documents on a scanner and putting them on the Web. There are many issues that archivists must contend with: the selection of appropriate digital asset management systems, digital reproduction standards, and metadata schemas for storing and discovering digital objects; the long-term preservation of digital objects; intellectual property and privacy rights; and best practices for scanning rare, fragile, and often multi-formatted materials. Beyond creating discrete digital collections, archivists are now also faced with the capture, storage, and online delivery of electronic records in all formats. This program seeks to educate information technologists about some of the challenges that archivists face in the digital world, and how the two groups are working more closely together to improve and expand access to the unique materials that archives and special collections departments are committed to preserving long into the future.

Workshop Organizer/Host: Karen Adler Abramson of Brandeis University

Date/Time:
Tuesday, June 15, 2010
9:00am -  3:00pm
What is measured by the standardized tests and other educational assessment we use today? And how do any of these assessments relate to the latest findings from the cognitive and brain sciences? Zachary Stein, an expert in the field of Mind, Brain, and Education, will address these questions in this engaging and challenging symposium. After recounting a brief history of educational psychology and assessment, Zak will detail the latest advances in the disciplines relevant to teaching and learning. Model building and myth busting, the new science of learning has radical implications when it comes to the assessment of student learning. Participants will unpack these implications through discussion and reflection, eventually thinking through innovative approaches to assessing important but often-neglected aspects of student abilities.

Workshop Organizer/Host: Karrie Peterson of Brandeis University

Date/Time:
Tuesday, June 15, 2010
9:00am -  3:00pm
There is currently an incredible interest throughout the academic community in externally hosted solutions and the potential cost saving benefits they may offer. How can we prepare ourselves to understand the real versus the perceived benefits of an in-house versus an external solution, make sure we are taking into consideration things that are key to our stakeholders beyond just initial cost and position ourselves to present that information to our institutions?

In this SIG, participants will work together to develop a decision matrix for evaluating service solutions. We will list and choose criterion for the matrix and tailor them to our particular institutions. Examples of criterion may include staffing costs, support costs, hours of available support, customization and branding, authentication, security, company viability, staff resources, etc.

Case studies involving both in-house and hosted solutions will be presented and we will practice using the matrices we develop to see how the solution may fit for our own institutions. Case studies will include moving from an in-house to a hosted solution for student email (Gmail) using a hosted solution for multimedia distribution (iTunes U) implementing an in-house, open-source course management solution (Sakai) and a hosted ERP solution (SunGard).

There are nearly 600 modules and plug-ins available to add to your Moodle system-- not to mention the many built-in functions that you haven't really explored very much! How can you tell the great ones from the duds?

Experienced Moodle administrators and users have been asked to demonstrate their favorite obscure functions that have made significant contributions to their systems. Some may be add-ons that you never heard of and others may be functions that you see all the time but you never realized how they could be used. Some presentations will be elaborate, but we will also have a lightning round of very short demos.

If you're a Moodle user or administrator, you're sure to leave this session with plans to incorporate one or more of these great ideas into your system.
In prior years we focused on security and support at small institutions. This year we will explore implementing, securing, and supporting SharePoint through successful case studies presented by institutions sharing their experiences deploying and using SharePoint. Institutions of all sizes are welcome.

The implementation panel will discuss customizing SharePoint to serve as a campus portal and the process of integrating SharePoint with an ERP. The implementation of plug-ins for Moodle, OWA, YouTube and other applications will be covered. The securing SharePoint panel will discuss methods and challenges to securing a site for use by the Board of Trustees and the necessary application and network measures required to protect highly confidential information in SharePoint. The governance panel will discuss strategies and policies to manage the deployment and usage of SharePoint. Models for the training and support of end-users and IT staff responsible for SharePoint will also be considered.

Small institutions can have highly effective approaches to unique challenges. This SIG will provide you with an opportunity to benefit from the collective knowledge and experience of your peers. The day is intended to be interactive and attendees with SharePoint experience will be encouraged to share their knowledge during the panel discussions. Come prepared to share, learn and collaborate with your colleagues.
Even for those who are not there yet, we have very good standards and best practices that facilitate implementation of digitization projects. Rather, today's central concern is rights management. Who can use it, how can they use it, and where can they use it? As we move rapidly towards digital learning environments, gaps in rights management and policy seem to emerge from every corner of campus.
What are the pathways for working with institutional counsel? How do we go about developing policies for mandated collaborative projects? Where does image copyright fit in with institutional repository licenses, and what are the emerging best practices, guidelines, and model agreements? In this SIG we will explore these topics through moderated scenarios, information sessions, and break-out groups.
While the quantity of information grows seemingly without limit, and the types and origins of information continues to evolve, at its core, the relationship of the elements of information to each other and the ways that people find and use that information has changed little. The semantic web is the next step in the development of the Internet, extending the ideas and tools already familiar to us. By adding meaning to raw information, the semantic web creates new opportunities for search, presentation of information, and publishing.

Sections:
- An exploration of the mechanisms of the semantic web: tagging, geo-tagging, metadata, RDF.
- An exploration of the importance of the semantic web: relating data to data rather than page to page, relationships based on meaning rather than similarity and arrangement, integration & combination of information
- Trends in the library and IT:
- Tools already available on the web, and uses being made of them.
With the right tools for the job, even a small staff can accomplish the insurmountable task of monitoring and controlling the functions of numerous types of equipment in several classrooms at one central location.

Attendees of this program will hear about the various types of control systems utilized for this purpose (AMX, Crestron, Extron) and they will learn about the manner in which they are set up on a network. Cost and time management benefits will be highlighted as well as the different ways to anticipate and troubleshoot problems remotely.

The instructional technology sector will prove critical to the innovation, growth and success of our IT organizations over the next decade. As front line support staff, technologists are ideally situated to leverage creative energy and collaborative problem solving and lead colleagues in IT and across campus toward improved understandings of pedagogically purposeful technology.

This workshop, developed by instructional technology colleagues among three institutions, explores key elements of this challenge. Workshop participants will actively engage the following topics:

• Piloting and planning successful projects or programs closely tied to curricular objectives;
• Promoting resources and services;
• Partnering to further the academic mission and position for the future;
• Predicting opportunities and challenges.

Participation is especially encouraged for pairs or small teams of director and instructional tech front line staff from the same organization.

The 2010 Horizon Report [http://horizon.nmc.org/], the seventh in this annual series, has just been published by a collaboration between the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), an EDUCAUSE program.

The Horizon Report provides a roadmap of upcoming technologies that a distinguished group of researchers, technologies, educators, and futurists evaluate and select for their potential to transform teaching, learning and the creative arts. The report is released each January to provide a description of these technologies and places them in a timeline of immediate impact (within the next 12 months), mid-range impact (1-3 years) or long-range potential value (3-5 years). This presentation will summarize the findings from the 2010 Horizon Report with illustrations of their potential implications for the NERCOMP community.

Topics include major trends identified by the report: mobile computing, open content, electronic books, simple augmented reality, gesture-based computing, and visual data analysis. Other subjects which surfaced from previous reports and this year's preparation include new digital literacy, changes to scholarly communication, and the recession's impacts. Framing all of this is a discussion of different methods for apprehending emerging technologies.

This workshop will be a mashup of presentation, examples, hands-on work, and discussion about where we're headed in the practice of technology enabled higher education. Participants will leave with several take-aways: first, an environmental scan about important emerging technologies, situated in the academic context. Second, networking opportunities with peers in the region. Third, a better sense of how to approach emerging technologies.
Participants will get up close in three areas: how to think about the technologies available to you when planning for improvements in your instruction program; how to adapt pedagogies that get us beyond sage on the stage, and ways of engaging with significant conversations on innovation. A lightning round, exploring how participants are framing near-term goals of their instruction programs, will address developments and indicators to monitor for anticipating user needs, key disruptive technologies and their implications, significant changes on campus in teaching and learning, and gaps and challenges we face across institutions.

Workshop Organizer/Host: Karrie Peterson of Brandeis University

Date/Time:
Thursday, April 08, 2010
9:00am -  3:00pm
Multi-user blogging platforms, campus newsletters, course project sites and central event calendars are just a few of the ways WordPress is being deployed in higher education. At WordPress University we’ll explore case studies and examples of how WordPress is adapted to meet these various needs. The day’s schedule will include opportunities to share and explore ideas with fellow attendees that can be applied to WordPress implementations in their home environments.

This is not a technical, hands-on workshop, and while some technical web programming details will be discussed, the program is designed to appeal to people with a range of experiences creating web sites and working with on-line web 2.0 and social networking tools. Some experience designing or editing web pages, managing a web site, or working on support of a web-based application will be helpful, but not essential.
The practice of print-on-demand, which allows for single copies of books to be published, eliminates many of the costs of traditional publishing, making it possible to produce high quality publications in very small quantities.

Online journal systems, many of which are open source, bring the publication of peer-reviewed journals within easy reach of faculty and students. Some journal systems are integrating with online repositories to deliver text and media rich publications that take full advantage of being online.

Attendees will see examples of projects using these new technologies and should expect to leave with at least one idea of a project they can consider at their institution.
