Attendance at the previous SIG is not a prerequisite nor is this is an exact repeat of the material covered in 2009.

Presentation Boot Camp is a full day workout (workshop) where we’ll dedicate time and effort to enhancing your presentation delivery skills in order to achieve optimal results.

We all know that “practice makes perfect,” but few of us devote sufficient time to preparation. The anchors on the evening news can tell us any story in 30 seconds, yet many presenters have difficulty meeting time limits and holding audience attention. We will share some tips on effectively practicing and assessing presentations and explore ways of customizing content delivery for time-limit and specific situation.

This SIG will be highly interactive giving all participants multiple opportunities to practice their presentation skills through:
• Short segments on a variety of topics (e.g. audience analysis, presenter tips, rehearsal, and assessment)
• Group activities exploring customization of content delivery for time
• Small group coaching sessions where participants will present and then enhance a presentation through group feedback

***We will not address PowerPoint during this SIG.***

Two short assignments will be required in preparation for the SIG:
1. Participants will bring a prepared two minute presentation, which will be used as the basis for many of the day’s activities.
• Choose a topic that can be easily understood by any audience. For example: a story about a vacation, funny family or work happening, hobby or pastime, etc.
• The presentation may include a visual aid, but for logistical reasons should not utilize PowerPoint.
2. A two to three sentence blurb of something funny, interesting, bizarre, or unique about yourself.

By end of day participants will:
• have received and given coaching
• have practiced giving their presentation a number of times
• be able to offer appropriate and useful feedback when assessing other’s presentations
• have thought critically about improving delivery of their presentations and the reception of their audiences

Free and proprietary, desktop and web-based, and high performance high definition devices made by vendors such as Tandberg and Polycom. While organizations take different approaches to videoconferencing, it is an important IT collaboration that at a minimum requires product evaluation, equipment recommendations, training, and support. As videoconference use increases, careful planning is required in order to invest in reliable communication tools for instruction and virtual meetings. On the front-line, technologists provide recommendations and technical assistance to faculty and administrators. On the back-end, network systems administrators assure connectivity and monitor bandwidth usage. Front and back-end coordination is essential for a small staff to provide this service.

Skidmore College, Colgate University, and St. Lawrence University will report back on the current status of videoconferencing at their respective institutions. In small groups, technologists and network administrators will discuss scenarios separately then as a larger group with an eye toward consensus: How are these tools used optimally to support different needs, goals, and disciplines - now, and in the future? Prior to the SIG, we will develop a Google doc template that participants will use to provide a description of videoconference activity, contacts, and systems. We will convene and engage a panel of experts via videoconference on topics such as high-speed networking, curriculum integration, and distance learning. (TBD)

Guiding questions:
- How do you evaluate videoconference solutions?
- Which technologies do you use and support (desktop, web, and hardware unit solutions)?
- Why standardize on a given technology (or not)?
- What are the "lessons learned" from front line technologists (pedagogy, coordination, training, support, promotion, etc.)?
- What are the best practices to share from a network administrator perspective (firewall, packeteer, bandwidth shaping, reports, etc.)?
- What feedback do faculty, staff, and students provide?
- What should you bear in mind if you want to grow this service on your campus?

How are our roles as librarians and technologists adapting to keep up?

• How do we organize our staff and our work to provide the flexibility needed to adapt to changing needs and expectations?
• As service needs and budgets change how do we retain (perhaps retrain) valuable staff and realign our work to our core priorities?
• How do academic support departments take advantage of the intersection/overlap of our skills and responsibilities in addition to our specialties?

In this session we will look at examples of staff reorganization, collaborative work groups and other strategies used to establish cross-departmental support for research and instruction.

Participants will engage in discussion about successful collaborative relationships, goals and challenges in their own organizations as we consider what successful working groups might look like now and in the near future. Discussion groups will also consider the professional development, management and community involvement necessary to support these models.

Does your organization have defined release management processes? Release management techniques guide you through the software development lifecycle. What are the risks and costs of editing code live on an ad-hoc basis? What are good practices and challenges that we have experienced?

This will be an interactive event where you will learn about release management from presenters and have an opportunity to share experiences with other attendees. Presenters all have experience managing software and the audience will be able to learn basic and advanced approaches that they can take back to use at their institutions.

This SIG will discuss what organizations have in place for policies and practices for systematically managing enterprise software. Technical details will include storing, releasing and reverting software as well as tracking enhancements and managing upgrades. Benefits and challengers for varying sizes of development teams will be discussed.

No more! Join us for a day of discovery as we investigate ways in which higher education institutions are exploring use of mobile devices in education, from accessing information in the field, to participating in activities on the go, to communicating with classmates. Our introductory session “mLearning 101” will ground you in this exciting new area of educational technology with an overview of mobile learning. From there you will learn from instructors, students, and instructional technologists about mobile learning projects already taking place and participate in a peer-to-peer working session to brainstorm project ideas that fit with your institution’s curriculum, culture, and resources. By the end of the day, you should leave with a strong foundation about this exciting new terrain.

Always asking what are the criteria for media scholarship by students? This SIG begins with an overview of three case study presentations of student-authored digital media scholarship that was guided by faculty and supported by instructional technologists and librarians. These cases studies will be followed by a poster session of the work in the broader context of what was necessary to reach that outcome from all involved (student, professor, technologist, librarian). We will focus on media literacy, learning models, evaluation criteria, and the resources necessary for success.

In the afternoon sessions, participants will collaboratively develop Matrices that match learning goals with potentially appropriate technology integration based on the opportunities and challenges at their own institutions. By the end of the day, we will tap into collective wisdom to solve perceived challenges and promote innovations that lead to media scholarship on own campuses.

Wading through the options can be a daunting task. While proprietary solutions have a sales force that can show you the features they offer, open source solutions generally do not, yet many instructors, programs, and institutions have adopted them. This workshop will showcase several of the open source solutions that are available. Participants will learn about the various features each offers, how they are being used, and information on hosting options.

A consultant will use some anonymous case studies on good (and bad) career planning: choices that are made along the way that are important for your career. These choices either build up your reputation or bring it down.

The day is focused on maintaining your reputation while enhancing your reputation and managing risk. We will cover how to do this within your current organization.

Topics covered: how to maintain your value with your current employer, what professional development might make sense for you right now, job searches, interviewing, handling a new boss and managing up.

There are new standards and practices surrounding the ways to best handle these large – and small – amounts of digital content. Colleagues from three different types of institutions and from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will share their experiences. These efforts are at different stages of development and execution. The presenters will also share trends and thoughts about the future, issues they face, and lessons they have learned along the way.

• How are we defining “critical literacies” on our campuses?

• What “literacy” skills do our students need to succeed as undergraduate students and graduates?

• What is the “right” time to introduce/reinforce them? Is there an ideal format?

• How are we assessing levels of understanding in our students and/or our programming?
• Who are our campus partners in addressing literacies across the curriculum?

• Where do our efforts fit within a student’s K-16 experience?

We will tackle these questions together in this mixed-format SIG including examples of existing literacy programs and group discussion. Participants should bring goals, program examples, questions and challenges from their own institutions.
