"The trend toward augmenting instruction with technology creates opportunities and substantial challenges for those who must respond to increasingly diverse and fluid instructional environments." (EDUCAUSE Review, July/August 2009, p 52)

The instructional technology sector will prove critical to the innovation, growth and success of our IT organizations over the next decade. As front line support staff, technologists are ideally situated to leverage creative energy and collaborative problem solving and lead colleagues in IT and across campus toward improved understandings of pedagogically purposeful technology.

This workshop, developed by instructional technology colleagues among three institutions, explores key elements of this challenge. Workshop participants will actively engage the following topics:

• Piloting and planning successful projects or programs closely tied to curricular objectives;
• Promoting resources and services;
• Partnering to further the academic mission and position for the future;
• Predicting opportunities and challenges.

Participants who attend this SIG will learn how peer institutions in the Northeast are using their LMS solution for innovation in teaching, learning and community building. The focus is not vendor product specific, but more about making the most of your LMS investment. (e.g. ePortfolios, Class Site, Web 2.0 tools, Professional Development strategies, etc.)

Outcomes for the Day:
-Learn from institutions who are using their LMS in creative and innovative ways
-Exchange resource information to help you utilize your LMS more effectively
-Build collaborations among institutions using an LMS
-Network and make connections with colleagues

Multi-user blogging platforms, campus newsletters, course project sites and central event calendars are just a few of the ways WordPress is being deployed in higher education. At WordPress University we’ll explore case studies and examples of how WordPress is adapted to meet these various needs. The day’s schedule will include opportunities to share and explore ideas with fellow attendees that can be applied to WordPress implementations in their home environments.

This is not a technical, hands-on workshop, and while some technical web programming details will be discussed, the program is designed to appeal to people with a range of experiences creating web sites and working with on-line web 2.0 and social networking tools. Some experience designing or editing web pages, managing a web site, or working on support of a web-based application will be helpful, but not essential.

The practice of print-on-demand, which allows for single copies of books to be published, eliminates many of the costs of traditional publishing, making it possible to produce high quality publications in very small quantities.

Online journal systems, many of which are open source, bring the publication of peer-reviewed journals within easy reach of faculty and students. Some journal systems are integrating with online repositories to deliver text and media rich publications that take full advantage of being online.

Attendees will see examples of projects using these new technologies and should expect to leave with at least one idea of a project they can consider at their institution.

The challenge is to cut costs without cutting resources. By utilizing Macs with multiple operating systems, faculty and students can have the best of both worlds in one platform. The need for electronic classrooms containing computers with multiple operating systems will require IT professionals to be well versed in setting up dual boot operating systems quickly and efficiently.

This presentation will highlight set up, troubleshooting, dealing with time constraints when rebooting between operating systems, the support and training of faculty and students and the pros and cons of Dual Boot Macs.

After the lunch break, attendees will participate in a Lightning Round SIG. Participants are asked to share a five minute presentation. Recommended topics include problems and possible solutions you have encountered when setting up dual boot operating systems. Please send an outline of your topic in advance to andolink@union.edu and strohecj@union.edu . Outlines must be received by March 1, 2010.
The economic realities facing colleges and universities today has forced many institutions to focus on cost cutting measures.

This SIG consists of a series of case study presentations of student-authored digital media scholarship that was guided by faculty and supported by instructional technologists and librarians. Each student presentation will be followed by a 20-30 minute panel discussion of the work in the broader context of what was necessary to reach that outcome from all involved (student, professor, technologist, librarian). We will focus on media literacy, learning models, evaluation criteria, and the resources necessary for success.

Participants will engage in discussions following each presentation. We also ask participants to offer ideas, examples, and approaches to development of multimodal assignments at their institutions.

Whether your focus is administrative services, information resources, teaching and learning, technology infrastructure, or management, you can benefit from attending the annual NERCOMP conference, March 8–10, 2010. Join us in Providence to:

- Connect with innovators and forward thinkers and learn about current and emerging best practices in higher education information services.

- Collaborate with others in positions similar to yours to exchange experiences and explore ways to tackle common challenges.

- Contribute your uncommon thinking for the common good in numerous discussion sessions and networking venues.

This year's conference will explore how our institutions and organizations are managing economic challenges, forging new visions, and integrating new information technology paradigms and approaches. How are emerging technological possibilities and economic conditions changing what "university" means? How are our IT organizations surviving and finding ways to thrive and lead the way under these new conditions? How are we evolving to meet the changing academic and administrative priorities of our institutions? What emerging technology opportunities and models are supporting the core missions of our schools and our associated organizational and professional development goals?

Premier Support will provide proactive strategic advice and guidance to help prevent IT problems from occurring, and prompt, accurate support to help resolve issues quickly, should any arise.
